About Cotton (Kapas) — India's White Gold
India is the world's largest cotton producer (34–37 million bales annually) and second-largest exporter after the USA. Cotton is India's most important commercial/cash crop, directly supporting 60+ million farmers and the textile industry. The crop is a Kharif crop sown in May–July and harvested October–February.
Major producing states: Gujarat (36%), Maharashtra (26%), Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. Gujarat's Saurashtra region is the largest cotton-growing area in India.
